And so it goes on…

I wouldn’t like to be a commercial landlord these days with House of Fraser closing a number of stores adding to their woes. I do wonder if they’ve taken into consideration when deciding which ones to close that some towns could end up with no shops on the high street!

Retailing as in bricks and mortar stores appears to be shrinking. However, consumer shows seem to be taking over, with several happening over the summer months.

The Baby Show at the NEC was well attended despite clashing with a certain wedding and wasn’t there something about a game of football? With over 200 exhibitors and plenty of visitors, it was considered a major success.

The Pregnancy & Baby Fair Roadshows start with Bodrhyddan Hall, in North Wales next month with another four to follow.

Pregancy2Baby took place last weekend. The UWE Conference Hall is a great place for a baby show with lots of parking just outside. With almost 4000 visitors, ticket sales were 50% up on last year!

Cumbria are getting in on the act with their show in Carlisle on July 29th. Another good line-up for local parents.

These last two are important because they are organised by independent retailers – is it a case of ‘if you can’t beat them’? Maybe other retailers should get together and create a show in their area. Perhaps something more along the lines of an open day?

However, there are too many big shows and as a result, sales volumes are falling.  The organisers are organising more and more shows, afraid that if they don't do a show in a particular city, their competitor will. Each show is servicing a smaller catchment area.

Shows are great for launching a new brand but some established suppliers are falling out of love with them. Falling sales per show and rising costs, add that to the loss of staff time and it becomes unsustainable.  Consumers expect big discounts, they come just for the bargains. Cheap! Cheap! Does this fit with your brand?

Nomi by Evomove & Tripp Trapp by Stokke come out tops in Stiftung Warentest

The Stiftung Warentest has tested 20 children's high chairs, 12 were growing staircase highchairs and eight highchairs and folding chairs. They found that eleven chairs were faulty with seven containing too many pollutants.

Simple up and folding chairs fit children up to three years. The models tested by Stiftung Warentest can be partially folded. In contrast, staircase chairs grow with the child so children are still ergonomically correct as they grow.

The two test winners scored with a grade of 1.6 just over the very good with a third model also performing well. Five highchairs were rated satisfactory and one sufficient. However, there were eleven poor children's highchairs in the test.

When children start sitting in their highchairs they put everything in their mouths. They suck on the fabric and put food on the tray before they eat it. Therefore, the Stiftung Warentest sets the same strict limit values for pollutants for materials that are accessible to the child in the chair as for small children's toys. In the test, they found:

Very high amounts of formaldehyde which irritates skin and mucous membranes and can cause cancer as well as allergic skin reactions.
Naphthalene which can probably cause cancer.
Plasticisers DINP (diisononyl phthalate) and DEHP (diethylhexyl phthalate). DEHP can impair fertility and damage the unborn child.
High levels of TDCPP - a flame retardant believed to cause cancer.

The Stiftung Warentest also found problems in construction in two of the tested highchairs which they believe are serious safety issues.

They also criticised highchairs with almost vertical backrest for children from six months.

Shnuggle and Babycup team up for '#bossmum' event with Apprentice star Jessica Cunningham!

Boss Mums from the world of celebrity, the blogging community and popular nursery brands came together last night for the ultimate BOSS MUM event, hosted by ‘Apprentice’ star and ‘Mother of Maniacs’ blogger Jessica Cunningham.

The event celebrated the power of mums who have made their mark through blogging, being an inspirational celebrity mum or having created successful brands, and welcomed not only key influencers, but celebrity mums too including Stacey Solomon, Jacqueline Jossa, Cara Delahoyde and Rachel Adadeji.

In a panel debate session, Jessica spoke to Stacey and Jacqueline about the highs and lows of being a celebrity mum, with the ladies offering advice to bloggers on how to deal with the work/family juggle and having confidence with motherhood. This closely followed by top mummy blogger chat with The Fat Funny One and Mre.Souer, both providing great tips on how to build a blog into a business.

The event was also a chance for bloggers and celebrities to get up close and personal with some of the key brands in the nursery industry who were all created by parents for parents. Sinead Murphy, Co-Founder of Shnuggle and Sara Keel, Founder of Babycup were among the brands invited to come along and talk to guests about their experience of setting up a successful brand and the challenges they have faced along the way. Guests were also able to interact with all the award winning products on show, including the innovative and hugely popular Shnuggle Bath, and Babycup First Cups - the mini open cups designed for healthy weaning.

With further activity planned in collaboration with Jessica, Shnuggle and Babycup are certainly Boss Mums who are rocking success!

It’s official – we’re one of the best

Mothercare CVA threatened as Childrens World plans narrowly rejected

Mothercare subsidiary Childrens World has seen proposals for a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) rejected by shareholders, plunging over 300 jobs into doubt.

The move, which was narrowly rejected, was a key part of the retailer’s restructuring plan as it sought a rent reduction from Children’s World, a subsidiary which houses 21 of its stores.

Following the approval of Mothercare UK’s CVA last week, which is set to see 49 stores closed and rents reduced on the rest, plans for a similar strategy for Childrens World were thwarted.

Creditors were required to vote separately on the larger group’s three subsidiaries, including Mothercare UK, Early Learning Centre and Childrens World, which accounts for 21 of the group’s 152 stores and employs 331 people.

Though both Mothercare UK and Early Learning Centre managed to receive more than the threshold 75 per cent approval, Childrens World fell just short with 73.3 per cent.

“The CVA Proposals and/or any restructuring of Childrens World are not expected to affect the ordinary course of operations of Mothercare, which continues to trade as a going concern under the control of its directors,” Mothercare stated.

It added that this would not impact the ongoing transformation or refinancing plans, and it will now consider all options for the business including closure, which it acquired from Boots in 1996 and rebranded into Mothercare World stores.

Mothercare is now considering all options for the affected stores, including shutting the outlets, which employ 336 people.

SnapDragon “Swoops” to rescue counterfeited children’s brands

SnapDragon, the legal tech company, has launched Swoop, an automated brand monitoring platform for brand owners, the first of its kind to be made publicly available.

Swoop has been created to enable brands to wage war with online criminal gangs of counterfeiters and copycats across all industries, including the child and baby industry.

In many markets, including children’s products, fake goods can be fatal or cause serious injury because counterfeits do not conform to the rigorous quality and safety standards genuine brands must comply with.

Rachel Jones, Founder of SnapDragon, explains why she is driven to fight fakes online. In 2013 she became the victim of a highly sophisticated online counterfeiting scam, where her multi-award-winning baby product, Totseat, was copied and sold online by fraudsters.

New Cumbria Baby Show

Baby Boutique Carlisle and Preston have founded Cumbria's first ever baby show! The aim is to provide Cumbria with the same coverage that the rest of the country receives with nursery shows.

Being a good two hours drive at least from the usual venues, it was felt that Cumbria needed their own show! There will be amazing show offers on the day on not just prams but clothing, car seats, nursery furniture and bedding and it is all under one roof! There will be exhibitors from around the country with unique different Baby Products that we normally aren't seen in Cumbria!

In addition, the show will be giving away a Venicci Travel System to one lucky Winner on the Day to take away! Everyone who books a FREE ticket will be automatically entered into the prize draw!

Pregnancy2Baby Show – a review

The second Pregnancy2Baby Show took place last weekend at the UWE Conference Centre near Bristol. I say near Bristol because it is actually close to where the M4 meets the M5. This gives easy access for consumers up the M5 from the south west, down the M5 for Birmingham, and along the M4 from south Wales and the south coast.

The Pregnancy2Baby Show take pride in being an intimate, informative show with friendly leading experts on hand to offer visitors professional and clear advice. This is especially important for first time parents who can often be bewildered by the variety of products available. The show is really the perfect opportunity for prospective parents/parents to see and try out lots of different brands under one roof.

There were a number of talks throughout the two days helping visitors learn about yoga, hypnobirthing, massage, first aid and, importantly in-car safety. Being passionate about in car safety, there were also IOSH accredited car seat fitters on hand to ensure the car seats chosen were suitable for the purchasers’ vehicles.

Visitor feedback was extremely positive with many asking as they left "when is the next show"! The answer to that is still under wraps as dates have yet to be finalised.
