Nursery Online - Latest News
Let me tell you a story…

Like so many small companies this one started when a mum saw a gap in the market. There was no product for a need that she had. So, like many others, she created that product, using quality materials and a good manufacturing process.

And it was a success!

Demand was high when she showed at an exhibition. Things were looking good! For a few years, things trundled along, selling through a number of retailers. Sales gradually increased, but she needed more. The trend by this time was to use social media, so that's what she did. Another success! She got lots of followers, many quite active in responding. She spent more and more time tweeting and posting, enjoying the interaction with her 'real' customers. She brought out new designs and was thrilled to read comments such as 'Gorgeous!' and 'Got to have one!'

She saw the 'Gorgeous' and the 'Got to have' as signs that this was the right way to go. But she missed the fact that the mum complimenting had already bought the product and now that baby was growing had no need to buy more. She didn't understand the implications of 'Got to have one!' One! That customer bought just one. That customer needed our entrepreneur to take one out of the box, package it up and post it off. A chore that she did willingly, ignoring the cost of her time.

However, she was not so willing to deal with any problems retailers had. They wanted things like Point of Sale material, display units. Their demand for boxes of mixed designs were a pain, but it was a way of getting rid of the less popular ones. The retailers didn't notice because she had never bothered to tell them about the new designs, the ones following the latest trends. All she noticed was that retailers were no longer selling as many, so that was a good enough reason not to bother with them. Indeed, she made more money per item selling direct. The fact that her costs were so much higher escaped her. Costs that increased when she had to take on more staff to cope with the demands of always being online. Still she had more and more followers so she had to be doing the right thing.

Things started to go seriously wrong when another company copied her idea. They brought out better designs and undercut her prices. She maintained that hers was the original and a better quality but in fact the little tweaks of the competition made hers the inferior product.

She still had all her followers but what she didn't have were the sales. Costs were rising, she didn't have time to talk to retailers. They were a nuisance anyway.

As you will have guessed, eventually it became all too much and she gave up. She wasn't missed by retailers who were selling lots of other things from companies that understood their needs.

And the moral of this week's rant is that you ignore retailers at your peril! Retailers are your biggest customer. They are the ones that in the long term will make or break your company!

PS: Our next Spotlight on the horizon is Baby Showers and Gifts. Baby showers are becoming an essential event in the social life of youngsters. It doesn't have to be something beautifully packaged (though that can help!). Gadgets are also very popular. If you have a product which fits into this category, then don't miss out on this opportunity. Copydate is April 16th - don't be late.

After that, in May, we have Mattresses & Bedding (copy by the end of April), Feeding Bottles & Sterilisers (copy by May 14th) and, at the end of the month, we have Weaning, including Bibs and Highchairs (copy by 28th please).

The British nursery trade at its best

Harrogate International Nursery Fair 2018 finished on a high as both exhibitor and visitor feedback reveals that for the majority of those attending it was another immense success.

Penny Franks, editor of Nursery Today magazine explains: “Nursery Today has always supported our only UK trade show and will continue to do so. Having spoken to many independent retailers and exhibitors during the three days, it was evident that this year was a huge success for all. Many commented on how cohesive the event was this year in its layout and how the friendly and relaxed atmosphere provided the perfect platform to conduct business.”

Kerry Haynes of Media Snug reiterated this comment saying: “I really enjoyed the show and had lots of press meetings. I liked the layout of the halls and there was a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout.”

Claire Alexander of Mummy Loves Organics presented her range of essential oil massage candles at the show and commented: “The layout has been really good for us. We saw lots of independent retailers and many major buyers – and felt that the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. Rather than rushing about, people had more time to stop and talk business.”

It will be many weeks before exhibitors can accurately evaluate their experience, as leads will be followed up and orders placed once retailers have had a chance to peruse catalogues and consider their purchase options. However, Rachelle Harel of RHSM Group was able to comment immediately, saying: “Across both of our brands (Little Chick London and Breathablebaby) we had our best Harrogate ever in terms of opening new accounts and taking orders – what more can I say.”

Neil Millard of Boori added: “A fantastic return to Harrogate for Boori. We had a number of well received new products to show our existing customers and (hopefully) impress a few new ones with. Our hall and position worked really well for us and as usual the Harrogate team was on hand to help out with anything else we needed. Very much looking forward to being back next year.”

The dates for Harrogate International Nursery Fair 2019 have been confirmed as 24th to 26th March, with many exhibitors already confirming their intention to return. Adrian Sneyd, show organiser, said: “We are delighted with the outcome of this year’s show – comments received from both exhibitors and visitors demonstrate that people want a UK nursery trade show and have voted with their feet and order books. We welcomed many returning brands and hope that the results of the 2018 show will encourage more companies to come back and exhibit their ranges to the British nursery trade next year.”

Bookings for next year’s show will commence in early May, so look out for more information soon to secure your stand – or go to

Give your sales a boost in China

The Baby Products Association has a last few stands remaining in its UK Pavilion at the world’s largest baby trade show – CBME Shanghai which takes place from 25 – 27 July 2018.

China is a massive market for the nursery sector as after the relaxation of the one child policy, the birth rate is increasing year-on-year by almost eight percent with 17.86 million newborns in 2016. Sales of baby products increased from US$308 million in 2015 to an expected US$462 million in 2018 – and importantly, European and British products are very much aspired to.

Simon Anslow, UK Pavilion organiser, explains: “CBME Shanghai is unlike any other trade show that we’ve ever attended. The stands are literally crammed with potential buyers from the moment the doors open until the show closes and poses a massive opportunity for British companies. We encourage everyone in the industry to come and explore this huge market – and there are still a few TAP grants of £2,500 available to help towards the cost of exhibiting.”

Can Toys”R”Us be saved?

Isaac Larian, founder of toymaker MGA Entertainment, which makes Little Tikes, Bratz dolls and Lalalopsy dolls, really thinks so.

He has investors lined up to help bail out Toys”R”Us, for about 400 stores. In addition to the $200 million he says are already pledged for, he created a “GoFundMe” page in order to raise even more cash, this time from consumers who don’t want to see the retailer go away.

Isaac Larian believes the toy company wasn’t the problem, and neither were the sales. He places the blame squarely on private equity ownership, who, he says, piled on the debt that was not in any way manageable. “Every penny it made went to paying debt service…”

To pull off his plans, Larian needs at least a billion dollars by the end of May. Otherwise, it’s likely that his dream to save Toys”R”Us will fail. He is however confident that he can get the cash. Media reports say he wants about half the stores as well as the Toys”R”Us brand.

The toy industry entrepreneur has legitimate worries about a future for the toy business without Toys R Us in the market. Sure, some brands will go exclusively online…but that’s not an option for everyone.

To all Babywise Customers and Suppliers

Unfortunately, following several tragedies in the family, in March 2018 after 36 years of trading, Babywise Ltd was taken into administration.

The beneficiaries (the children) explored every avenue to try and save the company to no avail. Having found no buyer, the assets of Babywise where eventually liquidated. In an open bid, I (Nicholas), eldest son of Peter and Kathy acquired the assets. We apologise greatly for the lack of communication, Babywise was under the control of administration and resolution took much longer than anticipated. We will communicate clearly from this point forwards.

So today I would like to announce to the customers and suppliers of Babywise the formation of 'MollyDoo Baby Ltd'.

My motivations for the acquisition are partly emotional, to rescue the family legacy and secure the future of many members of my family. I would not have done this however if I did not see the opportunity to build a great business and the adventure this would bring.

Mollydoo has inherited a product range at the top of the market, production assets and skills which allow the creation of bespoke goods of any size and composition. The inherited goodwill; recent events not withstanding, of a great history, reputation and standing within the nursery industry. I have a capable and motivated team at Mollydoo in whom I have complete confidence; and I believe with investment, a review of business policies/practices/procedures and good management we can build a really great company. We will continue to supply the same product range, and in the future will look at how to add more value to the benefit of our retailers.

The torch has finally passed from one generation to another, it has been a disruptive event for which we offer our greatest apologies. You can look forward to trading with a well capitalised and well managed company, with a renewed energy and outlook. MollyDoo Baby is now open for business, emails and telephone number given below.

I look forward to meeting many of you in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Nicholas Cunliffe
Director, MollyDoo Baby Ltd
