Talking?

From various snippets that have been mulling around I have come to a conclusion. I’m not saying it’s the right conclusion – in fact I hope that I’m wrong. But it’s hard to escape from these depressing thoughts.

I’ve just come back from a few days in Poland visiting the Kids Time fair in Kielce. All eight halls, expanding from seven last year. It was a vibrant show, with 520 exhibitors; well over 7,000 visitors. Many exhibitors were distributors with several brands under their wing so in total there were probably a couple of thousand brands to view. Even large companies such as Britax and Dorel deemed the show worthy of their attention! Eastern Europe is buzzing.

And this is in contrast with how companies are treating retailers in the UK. The unfortunate conclusion I have come to is that in Britain, suppliers no longer wish to communicate with retailers. OK they might send you some emails if one, you are already selling their products and two, you are big enough to be worthy of their attention. But in general, many retailers are fast becoming unwanted and unloved!

It’s all very well to moan and it’s too late now for the bigger suppliers to change their mind about coming to the Harrogate Nursery Fair though I understand there’s a few small stands available for smaller companies.

What would happen if all the UK buyers came to Harrogate at the end of the month and swapped their current product offering to those brands who do care about the nursery trade? I predict it would be a success for both retailer, the caring supplier and, in the end the consumer.

Large out-of-town stores apparently have had their day; online companies are finding their costs are shooting up with the huge amount of returns so I predict it won’t be long before a nice, local, independent shop with a choice selection of products will be THE place to shop.

And that’s a conclusion I hope is right!

PS: Just one Spotlight for this month and that is on Travel. We’re including everything that mum and baby needs to get out and about this summer (which I hope will be warmer than it is now!!). That includes things to keep the sun at bay as well as the useful gadgets. All those things that will sell, if only the consumer knew about them.

After that it’s time for our Harrogate previews. Many exhibitors are taking advantage of the extra pre-show publicity that Nursery Online can offer. Actually, it goes further than that, as Nursery Online advertorials reach over seven thousand subscribers across the globe including many who won’t make it to Harrogate. These little messages go a long way to establishing the reputation of the brand even if you are not yet ready for exporting!

Toys R Us has gone

Administrators have been appointed to begin "an orderly wind-down" of the UK's biggest toy retailer following the failure to find a buyer.

All 105 Toys R Us stores will remain open until further notice with a large sale of remaining products expected. The administrators said this would happen in stores only, as the online service and click-and-collect will be closed immediately.

The struggling business had been attempting to find a buyer, but its chief executive Graham Harris said it had "not been possible to secure a solvent sale of the business and as a result, we now have no alternative but to enter into an administration process."

Toys R Us has been facing a £15m tax bill. However, poor sales have made it unlikely that it can make the payment. Toys R Us managed to stave off administration in December after it struck an agreement with the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) to inject £9.8m into its retirement scheme over three years. The scheme has a shortfall of £38m which will now be transferred over to the PPF.

So why has the company failed?

There are many theories, most of which centre around the fact that large out of town warehouses are no longer in favour and they haven’t moved with the times by providing ‘an experience’ to shopping!

A lesson for nursery retailers there?

Our test winner just got better: the infant car seat Evoluna i-Size 2

What would you do with £5,000? Just ask the Nûby “Selfie” Soother Winner!

A surprised mum has won a £5,000 jackpot from Nûby, the baby feeding accessories brand. Mum of three, Emma Nelson, didn’t realise she had won until a team from Nûby turned up on her doorstep in Selby with the enormous cheque.

Emma entered the #NubySelfie competition several months ago. To enter she had to take a photo of her daughter Katy (aged 9 months) soothing on a Nûby “Kiss” Selfie dummy and then upload it to an App on Nûby Facebook. The competition ran for six months with over 30,000 dummies being sent out to parents wanting to enter. Each month a lucky winner has received £500 and a bundle of Nûby baby goodies. The competition ended with lucky Emma winning the £5,000 Grand Prize.

Head of Marketing, Helen Curran, said “We thought parents would love the Selfie competition because they love taking photos of their babies and sharing them, but we didn’t expect it to take off quite as well as it did. Last few stands remaining

Harrogate International Nursery Fair confirms that allocated space for the 2018 show is almost sold out with just a few stands remaining.

Latest companies to sign up include Mee-Go – offering highly rated travel systems and top-quality furniture with beautiful Picci and Dilibest brands; and M J Mark, leading manufacturer and supplier of quality wicker cribs, rocking horses and doll’s cribs and prams.

Adrian Sneyd, show organiser, comments: “Companies have left booking stands until the last minute this year, but the last few weeks has seen a flood of new enquiries and consequently all three halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre are almost fully booked, with just a few spaces remaining.”

New for this year is the New Product Showcase which will be the first port of call for retailers and buyers seeking the latest new product launches. In addition, the Baby Products Association has organised a great line of speakers for its annual Seminar Programme and will also be announcing the winners of its BANTA and Concept & Innovation Awards.

Like all spam, we’ve no idea where it came from but I’ve had a few like this. Seems like it’s the latest spam fashion!

For the record, if you are getting an invoice from us, it will be in an email from me with the invoice as a pdf attachment, and you should receive it in the first week of the month.
