Childhome opens office and warehouse in the USA

Childhome, a well-known Belgian manufacturer of baby products and furniture, has experienced a significant international growth over the last 10 years. Childhome already sells their products in more than 50 countries worldwide, they decided that the time was right to enter the American market.

In January of this year, the opening of the Childhome USA office and warehouse took place and all products arrived mid-February. Brisk business in Britain

The UK’s only trade show for baby and pre-school products – Harrogate International Nursery Fair – opens its doors to retailers and buyers in less than a month, from 24th to 26th March 2019.

Kids Time in Kielce

The 10th Kids Time was held last week (20 to 22nd February) in Kielce, Poland. The show continues to grow year on year and there is now a grand total of nine halls. The show is covers toys as well as clothing and juvenile products and this year there were 564 exhibitors from 21 countries covering over 20,000sqm.

Exhibitors ranged from home grown (yet international) companies such as Whisbear, who introduced their new Comforter blanket and cuddly toys to their best-selling Whisbear, Whisbird and the cute Sloth E-zzy. A number of international brands were there such as Shnuggle, launching their new Air Crib, Lodger, Kidsmill and Quax ably represented by small distributors such as Muppet Shop. Larger international brands such as BeSafe, Dreambaby and TFK were amongst many shown by Marko.

Important international brands such as Chicco, Cybex, Dorel and Britax Römer had large stands while some companies such as Childhome took additional space to support their distributors (and distribute exquisite Belgium chocolate to the chosen few!!). Turkey and Spain had their own pavilions and as usual, there were a number of Chinese manufacturing companies. Other countries were represented by brands such as Inglesina from Italy, Hauck from Germany and Vtech from the UK

Presentations with expert speakers such as Reyne Rice, a well-renowned international journalist who spoke on the upcoming trends in toys and Adam Fotek who spoke on Phthalates, continued throughout the first two days.

The show was busy on all three days. It is too early for precise numbers but the likelihood is that there will be yet another increase on the 7500 who visited last year. This isn’t just a show for the Polish and Eastern Europe market; there were several international buyers spotted as well, all looking for great products

Next year, the show will be held on February 19th to 21st, 2020, and promises to be even bigger and better.

To be certified as 100% organic, the cotton has to meet a very strict approval and quality process. The certifier, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), approves every step in the process from cotton to the finished goods. The GOTS is the world's leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including strict environmental and social standards and is backed by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. The process begins from the time the cotton is grown, to how the cotton is transported to the mill, how it is milled, how it is bleached using oxygen based bleach (non-chlorine), how the cotton is printed using low impact dyes, and must also meet a standard of fair working conditions set by the International Labor Organization (ILO). Certification is provided to ensure that all standards have been met and approved.

Traditional cotton is accountable for almost 25% of all chemical pesticides used in agriculture, with nearly 50% of the textile industry using cotton. “These chemicals are seeping into our Earth. Inevitably over time, this increases green-house gases and the likelihood of contamination of the same soil that may grow our children’s, children’s vegetables,” says Cynthia Mann. “We think that is a BIG deal.”

“What we dress our children in is so important, and often times we are unaware what went into making it,” says Jason Rector. The print designs are whimsical, modern and minimalistic while the unique colors are tranquil and inspiring. The current collection offers sizes for babies ages 3-6 months and 6-12 months. “We came up with modern and sophisticated designs that are inspired by our natural surroundings and then interpreted in a child’s mind’s eye,” says Cynthia.

The color palette is unique inspired mostly by familiar colors from Mann’s childhood, whether it be from wrapping paper, wall paper or fabrics from the time. “I was always intrigued and interested in color and patterns as long as I can remember and it's what has inspired me to be in the industry of textiles and children's clothing,” says Cynthia Mann.

ABC show plans for 2019

Plans are well underway for the two ABC produced events in 2019 - The Spring Educational Conference and Trade Show in Reno, Nevada, April 30-May 2, 2019 and the ABC Kids Expo, October 23-25 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Spring event will be held at the Grand Sierra Resort, with hotel rooms as low as $59 per night. In addition to the trade show component, popular segments include the Modern Parents Panel and Retailer/Manufacturer forum session.

Two complimentary network receptions will be held in the evenings right on the Grand Sierra Resort property, with free lunch on the show floor on May 1st and discounted breakfast buffet. The event will also include the Brixy Stores annual meeting to be held on April 30th.

“The Spring SEC is a great way for stores to share successes and tips with each other to maximize the shopping experience for customers and increase sales and profits,” said Mark Simon, Executive Director of Brixy, who is also a member of the ABC Board. “This is a must attend event for any manufacturer looking to break into the specialty market,” remarked Karen Casson, Chair of ABC.

Board members spent considerable time with ABC show management developing and refining the Fall ABC show floor plan and schedule for 2019. Toys”R”Us starts a new life in the US

Toys“R”Us has officially emerged as a new company, with a new name “Tru Kids Inc”. The company is the new parent of Toys“R”Us, Babies” R”Us, Geoffrey the Giraffe and more than 20 established consumer toy and baby brands.

Tru Kids is headquartered in New Jersey with a team of returning Toys“R”Us employees.

Tru Kids Brands is led by Richard Barry, the former global chief merchandising officer at Toys “R” Us, who will serve as President & CEO. Joining Barry are Matthew Finigan as CFO, James Young as EVP of global license management & general counsel, and Jean-Daniel Gatignol as SVP of global sourcing & brands.

The company appointed brand management veteran Yehuda Shmidman as Vice Chairman to advise on global strategy and execution. Shmidman is the CEO of Wave Hill Partners, and the former CEO of Sequential Brands Group.
