GDPR is coming!

May 25th sees the implementation of a new Regulation for the EU. Any company holding data on EU citizens will need to comply. It doesn’t matter if you are based in America or Asia; you will need to comply.

The Regulations are too complex to explain here, but essentially you need the explicit permission of someone to send out a wide variety of communications.

That, of course, includes Nursery Online and this newsletter, so you need to resubscribe right away if you want to continue being up to date on the latest international news.

The CBME India 2018 comprised a number of salient features including power – packed knowledge sessions, seminars, discussion of new trends and various international pavilions to surge into the rapidly expanding and diverse retail sector in India. doddle & co® debuts the chew™, a multi-use teether

From the two moms who brought you The Pop®, an award-winning pacifier, comes The Chew™, a soothing teether with “poppable” bubbles to keep busy hands happy. So while it helps sore gums it’s also a toy—kinda like bubble wrap (but way better).

This is all thanks to Doddle’s patented “pop” technology, developed by an industrial engineer (and mother of 3), co-founder Janna Badger who noticed her own baby was using the Pop pacifier to nosh while teething.

"My inspiration was seeing how much fun my 1-year-old had just popping the pop® pacifier," says Janna, Inventor of The Pop®/Product Designer. "Even I pop it just for fun, so a poppable teether had to happen."

Available in two styles, hello, sunshine™ and looks like rain™, the chew™ retails for $9.99.

Some other highlights:

  • Dishwasher safe
  • Refrigerating or freezing is optional (it’s effective at room temperature, too)
  • 100% silicone. No PVC, BPA or phthalates
  • Responsive bubbles encourage fine motor skill development and hand-eye coordination
  • Playful micro-textures massage sore gums (and entertain fingers)
  • Hollow bubbles are easy for baby to grab and hold on to

Australian GST is coming

Overseas sellers shipping to Australia will soon be subject to a new tax regime. The new Australia GST (general sales tax) will come into force from the 1st July 2018.

From that date, GST will apply to the sale of low value goods sold to consumers in Australia valued at A$1,000 or less. International retailers must register online if they have a GST turnover of A$75,000 or more per year. Businesses that don’t comply will be subject to sanctions. However, according to the Australian Tax Office, their preferred approach is to continue working with businesses to help them comply and they will make sure that any businesses that have made a genuine attempt to meet their taxation obligations will not be disadvantaged.

The new taxation measure will provide fairer trading for all retailers and ensure low value goods purchased by consumers in Australia have the same tax treatment, no matter where they are purchased from.

The ATO say they will use financial data tracking, customs data and online investigations to identify merchants that haven’t met their obligations.

Spotlight on New Zealand

New Zealand is a small country. A population of just 4.8m has less than 60,000 births each year with the average age of mothers now 29. So what’s the market like for the nursery trade?

Nursery Online met with Bruce Nuttall of Baby First in Christchurch in New Zealand to find out.

“Like all parents throughout the world, New Zealand parents are looking for good brands. Baby First specialises in bringing those into the country. The business was started by my father over 50 years ago and we are still going strong. Over the years we have added quality, worldwide brands to our range.

“Because the market is so small, volumes are not large. Many brands see that as a problem and try to manage exports via Australia. When you look at a world map, inevitably the two countries look next to each other. However, Sydney to Christchurch is a four hour flight – that’s the same as New York to Jamaica or London to Moscow.” Going thorough Australia, Bruce reckons adds around 30% to the cost. It is usually cheaper to ship direct from China!

Some companies have set up their own NZ subsidiary but for many brands, using a distributor is a more cost effective way. “At Baby First, we can handle the smaller quantities as well as dealing with all the paperwork!”

There are three main retail chains with only 5 or 6 truly independent stores in the whole country. Baby on the move is a chain of around 17 franchisees which has been operating since 1998. Baby City has around 14 stores countrywide and Baby Factory has around 25. Many shops are located not in city centres as rents are too high but in the smaller shopping malls and suburbs.

New Zealand is also seeing a trend to online shopping. At present it is only 10 to 15% but it is growing and putting pressure on retailers. After all, every Special Offer is visible to everyone. Instead of having a few Specials and making margin on everything else, now they have to price match every offer or lose the sale!

The New Zealand market is different from some others. For a start, the outdoor life is very important. Parents want to be out and about with their little one. This means that three-wheeled buggies like the Baby Jogger City sell very well. It’s not just a fashion statement. Parents need the strength and the ease of use of these. They are often taken onto the beach where sand and salt are a deathknell.

Another point of difference results from the fact that New Zealand is tectonically very active – that is there are a lot of earthquakes. If a major earthquake were to hit your home, you want to be sure you can get to the kids and that means having them close, not in some distant bedroom. Therefore products such as the Halo Bassinet, which enable baby to sleep in the same room as the parents are very popular!

Because of the outdoor lifestyle, many New Zealand parents prefer natural products – and are prepared to pay that little bit more for them, so an 80% wool Vest will happily sell for NZ$20.

Many of the shops have significant displays of clothing and toys. According to Bruce, this is because the margins are higher on these products and “they don’t take so much time and knowledge to sell!”

So what is in the shops? All the main international brands are there. Medela does well in feeding. The new strollers from Baby Jogger for their 10th anniversary are flying off the shelves. With carrying baby becoming more fashionable, brands such as Ergo and Lillebaby are popular. However, sales of framed carriers are declining! Another popular brand is Love to Dream with their sleep suits – they have ‘legs’ so a toddler can walk, then the ends are turned up for night time.

Car seats is an interesting category. “Here we can sell car seats that conform to the European standard, the American standard or the Australian standard! So we have a great choice! The fact that the American standard tests to a higher weight makes consumers think that these are better choice than the European – even though that is not really true. Top car seat brands Maxi Cosi, Britax, Diono tend to be the American version rather than European or Australian.

“The New Zealand market is very competitive,” says Bruce. “With so many possible brands, consumers have a great choice – and it’s my job to ensure they can buy them in New Zealand shops!”
